Back to School, Back to Basics: A Maritime Confined Space Refresher

August means back to school—and a return to the basics. Just like a lot of our kids have been doing these last couple of weeks, we may wonder why we’re reviewing the nitty-gritty details we already know. But sometimes a refresher is worthwhile, even for those of us who have been doing this work for years. When you’re working in and around maritime confined and enclosed spaces, the fundamentals matter—especially when the job starts to feel routine.

Before You Enter

Know the space before you enter it.

Ask yourself:

  • What was in the space previously?
  • Has it been cleaned, ventilated, or disturbed?
  • What work is happening nearby?
  • Could another space, pipe, tank, or operation affect the atmosphere?
  • What hazards should you expect based on the space and its history?

Don’t rely on what the space looks like. Even a clean-looking tank can contain a dangerous atmosphere.

Test Before You Trust

Make sure your atmospheric testing is appropriate for the hazards that may be present. Know what your instrument is telling you—and what it isn’t.

Remember that atmospheric conditions can change because of:

  • Hot work
  • Coating or chemical work
  • Changes in ventilation
  • Leaks or spills
  • Opening or disturbing piping
  • Work in adjacent spaces

A good reading is a snapshot, not a guarantee.

Keep Watching

Your job doesn’t end when the initial test is complete.

If conditions change, stop and reassess. Additional testing may be necessary before work resumes.

If something doesn’t look, smell, sound, or feel right, don’t assume someone else has already checked it. Speak up and take another look.

Know When to Stop

The most important tool in your toolbox isn’t a meter—it’s your judgment.

If conditions aren’t understood or controlled, don’t enter and don’t authorize the work.

Going back to the basics isn’t a step backward. It’s how experienced people avoid becoming complacent.

Know the space. Test the atmosphere. Watch for change. When in doubt, stop and reassess.
