Rotten Eggs

Easter is just around the corner, which means those of us with little ones will soon have a lot of great looking eggs – but what about the bad eggs?  The smell of rotten eggs is never pleasant, but those of us in the maritime industry and others dealing with confined spaces should be especially concerned by this odor.  Hydrogen sulfide is a colorless gas with a “rotten egg” smell that is extraordinarily hazardous.  It can be found in sewage, ballast mud, food waste, gray water, crude oil, natural gas, and more, and is deadly at high concentrations.  Olfactory fatigue can set in quickly after exposure to the gas, leading many to believe they are no longer in danger.  We all know it is better to be safe than sorry, and this is most assuredly no exception.  GET OUT if you ever run into this offensive odor in a confined space and ensure atmospheric testing is performed prior to entry by you or anyone else.  For more information, check out this Hydrogen Sulfide (H2S) OSHA Fact Sheet.
